does anyone want to venture a guess as to what the part-time position. Is 20-25k too much?

 

As someone who moved to Chicago last fall without a journalism gig lined up and has seen his 'career' stall out to the point of actually getting a 9-5 souless job, this is extremely exciting (the full time position). Of course it wont pay as much as the job I have now, which is god's way of kicking me in the nuts.

When I worked in the burbs for a different chain we used to jokingly refer to these guys as the "Be Confused" instead of the Beacon-News. As for salary, I topped out at $27K after five years, so anyone expecting in the 30s out there is delusional. And no, you definitely can't live in the city, unless you want most of your pay taken up by gasoline or Metra fares.

 

Looks like this person was working at the wrong place. You should bank on AT LEAST 30k based on what I understand the standard is for newcomers in the chain.

 

I guess the question now to ask is what are they looking for in terms of experience and would they be willing to pay more for that experience. I would guess most places do, but small papers can be a little different. Then again this small paper does belong to the Sun-Times group.

 

You're right, in terms of salary, but I did work for good people in Downers Grove (Liberty Suburban Chicago Newspapers).
