American Idol Finale 5/22

Can anyone tell this AI newbie how the hell Hicks won? He'd have finished eighth in this year's field.

 

Because Elliott's teeth and hair scared people?

Otherwise, I have no idea.

 

Because people forgot to vote for Chris Daughtry one week.

 

He was an energetic performer, a pretty good singer in a Michael McDonald/bar band kind of way, he was different, and he also came across as someone who deeply loved the music as opposed to someone simply blessed with a good voice.

More than any of that, though: he came from the deep south. Jordin is the first winner who isn't from the south.

Taylor certainly wasn't the most talented singer last year, but he had a lot working in his favor.

I guess I had to have been there. I didn't get any of those supposed strengths from his performances tonight.

 

Daughtry taunted viewers with his self-indulgent, inaccessible song choices.

He got what he deserved on the show.

If only he could have sung Home last year.

Funny.

 

The correct result. Better for Blake that he didn't win.

But just because the winner was deserving shouldn't mask the fact that the final 24 and the final 12 were terrible -- without personality or talent.

 

All that quirky crap has been ironed out, Dools.

Now, he is utterly insignificant, except for the fact that he will probably be the least-talented winner for a long time/ever.

 

Simon, you keep talking about Clarkson's range.
Like when she was screeching tonight during Sgt. Pepper's?
She's a great singer, but Underwood is better and will finish with WAY more album sales than she does.

 

She would have had to improve to screech...

And if LaKisha had showed one-tenth the personality on stages as she did during the affiliate exit interviews last night, she would have been in the final three...

Success depends on a bunch of variables. Twenty-plus years ago I would have sworn Cyndi Lauper was going to be a much bigger hit than Madonna.

Lauper had an amazing vocal range, still does - a hundred times better than Madonna's - and she was unique. But it was nothing compared to whatever it is Madonna has: sex appeal, irreverence and an ability to adapt to the environment around her.

As for who I prefer: I don't listen to Underwood much, but Clarkson's doing very well for herself.
