The Montreal fans absolutely hated Samsanov. I know a guy who went up to see a Rangers-Habs game at the Bell Centre, and those fans booed Samsanov's name after he was announced as a scratch.

In the 63 games Samsanov played in, he skated with Alex Kovalev, who plays the same game he does, and Samsanov couldn't contribute anything.

In March, the Montreal Gazette wrote a feature on Tomas Plekanec. Early in the season, he, too, skated with Kovalev and Samsanov. But he struggled to find his niche. Midway through the season, Guy Carbonneau moved Plekanec onto another line and he caught fire playing a "simple" game.

Perhaps the most damning statement that can be made about a player was uttered by Bob Gainey.

absolutely. and the thing that is worst about him is not that the he trots out that "kinder, gentler" nonsense at every new stop, but that he picks on the weak.

and i don't mean soft players, altho he does that. he would've run leetch out of ny if messier didn't tell him he was crazy, so that tells you all you need to know about his hockey smarts.

no -- he picks on the trainers, and the assistant PR people, and the stick boys when his team is the visitor.

and more remarkable than his getting another job is that he's been able to get another job at all after bailing out on the NYR during game 6 versus NJD in 1994, when he stood on the bench and refused to coach. messier ran the bench that night because keenan was too busy doing his "i'll show you all how you can't win without me."

    despicable.

The then-President of MSG, Bob Gutowski, put his foot down when Keenan was begging Neil Smith to trade Leetch to Chicago for Chris Chelios.

George Johnson wrote a tremendous column for ESPN.com, flat-out saying that Keenan could be the reason Iginla and Kiprusoff leave Calgary following next season.

Shaky is usually a pretty good read.

Agreed, HB. That was well done. Can Sutter survive if Iron Mike rides everyone too hard, bombs and causes Iginla and Kipper to leave?

I can't see Sutter and Keenan surviving a mass exodus. Kipper, Iginla and Phaneuf are The Flames. If one or two leave, the entire organization is screwed.

That's my thinking, too. Probably why Johnson was as blunt as he was ... well, that and Keenan's act has long been tired. If we recycled trash as well as the NHL recycles Keenan, Greenpeace would be throwing parties en masse.

Wayne Gretzky and Mike Gartner are two of the game's great gentlemen. Ask them what they think of Keenan.

If Gretzky's willing to trash Keenan publicly, that says all anyone needs to know ...

Gretzky's running a Mickey Mouse organization in Phoenix, so he has no say in the matter.

    Claws,

I'm not sure how the job Gretzky has done in Phoenix is applicable to a discussion of Mike Keenan's treatment of people.
