Self-starter sought to jump on daily breaking news, work on enterprise and write daily stories that have meaning. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to get a foot in the door and build clips. We're a small daily covering three coastal communities in Central Florida. There's always something happening and some assignments are pretty cool: The Daytona 500, Bike Week, Spring Break, the Pepsi 400. If you prefer natural distasters, in February, we covered killer tornadoes just a mile from the newsroom. We stress power reporting with a focus on real people and issues that impact their lives. Our newspaper is 5 minutes from the beach. And yes, we're within 90 minutes of pro sports, the arts and nightlife in Orlando, Jacksonville and Tampa. Who doesn't prefer natural disasters? That's a silly question.

20-25K for Central Florida? Does that come with your own box or do you have to provide your own?

 

I think the subline deleted at the final reading by the HR department said "food stamps and pup tent not provided."

 

Can they really have three coastal communities in CENTRAL Florida?

 

Yes. Central Florida comprises pretty much everything from the Daytona Beach area down to somewhere around Satellite Beach, along with the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford area. And NSB's not a bad town, altogether.

As for the job ... not quite RUN! but go into it with your eyes wide open. The Observer is vastly overshadowed by the Daytona Beach News-Journal, both in terms of advertising and coverage. And while the newsroom is 5 minutes from the beach, it's a concrete bunker with no windows. At least, it was. And apartment rents have started to drop in the Daytona-NSB area as market reality settled in.

Natural distasters? Sounds like somebody's going to be on the asparagus beat.

 

And if you're looking to shed a few pounds, the great whites at new smyrna beach will be happy to chew a few elbows off for you.
