Sports writer, Hobbs, NM

Do you have a passion for writing? Is your knowledge of sports great enough to provide readers with the in-depth coverage they crave? If so, you might be the next addition to the News-Sun sports department. The Hobbs News-Sun, a 10,500 circulation, six-day a week newspaper in Hobbs, N.M., is seeking a sportswriter to add to its award-winning staff. The News-Sun three-person sports staff covers five area high schools, as well as a junior college and an NAIA college. In a coverage area of 50,000 people, prep and small college sports are king, and we cover them accordingly. Teams in the coverage area, which include the nationally renowned Hobbs High School boys basketball program and junior college baseball power New Mexico Junior College, are competitive and regularly compete in the state playoffs in most sports. The successful applicant will be expected to write weekly features and columns, as well as provide strong insight and analysis on teams in their beat. Experience working with Quark Xpress is a plus. Experience at a weekly or small daily newspaper is preferred, but not required. This position is ideal for recent college graduates who are looking for experience and are willing to be an integral part of our ever-improving sports section.

The plus is covering Hobbs High boys hoops. The 5A program isn't quite as dominant as during the Ralph Tasker era -- one year the Eagles averaged 112 per game, a national record -- but still pretty damn good. And NMJC's baseball team always contends for juco national titles. Football? They get smacked around, at least by the Goddards and Artesias of the 4A world.

 

Hobbs has a paper?
I know there is a really high crime rate there, but they also have a casino and a horse track.
Xan - There basketball has fallen off some, but I have been told I need to go see a game there before I leave West Texas. It is supposed to be quite the experience.

 

What you really need to do, 'gola, is go see a football game at Artesia's Bulldog Bowl.

As for the job, how good could it be if you had to live in Hobbs? The only good thing about Hobbs is the multitudes of "friendly" women.

 

I would check out the Artesia football thing, because I have heard it is awesome, but I am kind of tied up on Friday nights in Texas. As far as Hobbs, I can't fathom living there. The crime rate is through the roof and it is just an awful, awful place in the middle of nowhere, unless you consider Seminole, Texas, a "city."

 

I like middle-of-nowhere towns in the Southwest far more than most people do. But Hobbs...que hell-holio.

 

Hobbs may not be the best town, but the SE and the other reporter are good young guys and fun to work with.

 

I was SE in Hobbs a dozen years ago and, admittedly, Southwest NM is an acquired taste, but some of the nicest people I've met in my nearly 20 years in the biz were in Hobbs. And Daniel Russell, the paper's editor, is one of the good guys . . .

 

Hobbs SE beat me out for the writer gig in Midland. Then I got hired in Odessa. Amazing how that worked.

 

The Hobbs paper has a good track record of young people moving up to daily papers in Texas, so if you are just getting into the business this is not a bad gig at all.
And with the racetrack and casino in town, you would at least have stuff to do after you get off work if that floats your boat.
