    Wow, talk about uninformed.

State troopers are not "having to police the streets." The police force as is may not be doing a top-notch job, but that's nothing new. It was like that prior to the storm. The department has its hands full fighting itself as well as criminals and the DA's.

As for $60K, it can go a ways, actually. You probably won't be owning, at least right away. Homeowners insurance is out of hand, but renter's is not. There are plenty of places to live Uptown (I can think of a good dozen For Rent signs in my neighborhood alone) and more places come online every day. You can live on the Best Bank if you want, or out in Metairie. The Marigny still is a good place, and so is MidCity. Yes, the COL has gone up, but you can still enjoy the hell out of yourself for $60K

You can't own a house on a $60k salary? I make that now and have a four-bedroom home and support a wife and kids. Crazy.

I'm sure you could own a house here for $60K. I haven't searched. I don't make that. But I do know that homeowner's insurance is making it difficult to own houses down here.

    June 2007: $223,309

Two-bedroom apartment in New Orleans metro area:

    Before Katrina: $676
    One year later: $940
    Two yrs. later: $978

I imagine insurance is causing a significant chunk of that rise in rent, and it more than makes up for the cheaper home prices.
