The Associated Press seeks a sports writer for its Kansas City, Mo. bureau.

This person will work as part of a two-person team covering professional and college teams, including the Chiefs, the Royals, the Wizards, University of Kansas and Kansas State University. Some coverage of NASCAR, golf and other sports may be required.

This person will approach the assignment as a beat and show a track record of source development that will enable the AP to compete aggressively in an aggressive marketplace. In addition to crisp and insightful game coverage on deadline, this person must develop sources needed to consistently break news and regularly generate enterprise that extends beyond player profiles and game previews.

The successful candidate must participate in long-range planning and coordinate coverage with the sports desk in New York, the news editor for Missouri and Kansas, bureau supervisors and freelancers to ensure that all member needs are met. He or she should also be able to represent the AP at occasional member meetings and conferences.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills needed include demonstrated excellence as a reporter, writer and editor, with success covering spot news, developing compelling enterprise, breaking stories on his or her beat and producing multimedia content. Applicants will also be required to assist in coverage of non-sports stories and work general reporting and/or editing shifts as needed.

The successful candidate must be able to recognize and develop newsworthy stories, work accurately under deadline pressure, be able to juggle multiple assignments and communicate effectively with editors, colleagues and sources. This person must be able to work closely with and take direction from editors on the sports desk in New York, the Kansas City news editor and bureau supervisors.

Candidates must be able to coordinate with photographers and others who produce multimedia content, and also guide and help arrange coverage by freelance writers.

Wasn't this Doug Tucker's gig? Where's he off to?

Is anybody leaving KC? I'd love to move back there someday, but can't right now.

 

Doug Tucker is still the main man for the Associated Press in KC. This position opened up when the No. 2 guy, Steve Brisendine, resigned a week or so ago. A nice mix of college and pro coverage on this beat. Unfortunately most of the teams (Chiefs, Royals, K-State) are mediocre.

 

why is that unfortunate? anyone who bases their career choice on whether teams win or lose is missing the big picture. these things go in cycles and besides, it has nothing to do with your job.

 

Easy there, tigre. Sorry the word "unfortunate" set off such a spark. Tell you what: You sit through 80 Royals home games for three or four years in a row and then come up with a description of your own.

That being said, this is still a good job. And Tucker is a nice guy.

I seem to recall Steve doing more of the college stuff with Doug doing more pro coverage. Still this has to be a pretty swell gig. You won't have to watch the police blotter as much with Bob Huggins boozing his way to West Virginia.

 

what's the likely experience threshold for this gig?

 

I'd say at least two to three years' metro experience, or more if it's a mid-major. I doubt it'd go to a young'un, unless he's an f'in stud.

 

I agree with The Good Doc. I'm thinking they want someone who has experience covering an MLB or NFL team and who has shown they can write well on deadline. Last thing AP needs is someone who is slow at filing. That just leads to complaints from member papers.

 

Ha, I know someone who would fit this criteria ... (No, it's not me).
