This is solid and it hits close to home.

The Ronnie Lott Pasta is very good. No finger, either.

Harry Carson and Dermontti Dawson chicken dishes were nice as well.

    Solid cookbook all around.

Just got back from paying a bill at the drug store, and they had this book on display (words and numbers are verbatim): "Any Blonde Can Cook — Two Hundred 69 Ways to a Man's Heart."

Joy of Cooking is the must-have book. And as others have pointed out, it is so timeless you can put it in your will.

But once you get through the basics, branch out a bit. My real introduction to cooking was a book called "20-Minute Menus" by Marian Burros of the New York Times. Probably still available on Amazon. Try "salmon floating in wine."

The Williams-Sonoma books are also good and subject-oriented: grilling and smoking, salads, soups, etc.

Then, if you really feel confident, get yourself a copy of Julia Child's first book, "Mastering the Art of French Cooking," and learn how we used to eat before the fat police.
