New Final Four weekend thread

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by spnited, Apr 5, 2008.

  1. Shit, my friend from Memphis is never going to let me hear the end of this. Not after how I went on about Memphis being overrated every year and getting beaten in the tournament by crappy teams.

    Go Kansas!

Other programs don't have that $30,000 FedEx "internship."

Who got the internship? Lou Roe?

I read that Rod Strickland is on Cal's staff? When did that happened??

That has to be the first Lou Roe reference in the history of SportsJournalists.com. As a recent UMass grad school alum, I salute you. :D

  5. Outside of UNLV in 1990, I never saw a team play any better in the FF than KU did in the first half last night. That Aldrich kid looks like Kevin McHale. That said, the ESPN crew spent a lot of time after the game tormenting Digger (good) and talking about how Kansas might be too worn out to play Monday night because of the "tough game" UNC gave them. Knight compared it to Indiana-UNLV in 1987, which was just dumb, since that was a 99-97 game or something. Hell, Kansas was telling jokes at the three minute mark. I don't get this.

In the, "fate wants me to look ridiculous" division, I note that of the ESPN circle-jerkers, the only one I thought made a good point was Knight. He allowed as how Kansas had played with maximum intensity for 14 minutes, but that the one team in the tournament that had played with said intensity the closest to 40 minutes a game was Memphis.
I plead very guilty to misunderestimating Memphis. That's a freakin' good team. Although a Kansas win Monday could still land me an in-the-money finish bracketwise, I am no longer expecting one.

I think Spnited's link that started this thread has a mention in it that Cal was the KU assistant that got truck driving Ed Manning on his coaching staff, thus ripping Danny away from UNC.

T-minus three years until all the skeletons of this Memphis program starts making its way into magazines, newspapers and the internet.

Look at the roster. Common sense tells you that these guys don't leave all these major markets to play in a lower conference. There has to be a carrot or two out there. And no, one of these carrots is not the shining academics of Memphis.

The last time this hoops program was this good the school had to change its name and the coach wound up in prison.

As for Rowe, I heard he was such a shit student that Georgetown and Temple couldn't even get him on campus. When UMass enrolled him, a big "you gotta be shitting me" went up and down the East Coast.

    Go Kansas.

I can also add that, during his time at Pitt, Cal was notable for (allegdly, ahem) telling recruits that Lou Carnesecca had terminal stomach cancer, and he was so generally beloved around the Big East that they had to separate him and Rollie Massimino at the league meetings one year.
    "Vacated."
The Memphis SID should learn to spell that word pretty soon.

  9. And, of course, the big news of the weekend.

If the NCAA rules were enforced fairly and strictly, U of Vacated would be working on its 70th consecutive men's basketball championship.

F_B, my cousin was recruited by St. John in 1987, and the reason he did not go there was the fear Lou would not be there for his senior season.

Apparently Derrick Rose missed the media interviews today w/ a stomach virus, but he's expected to play tomorrow night.
