By coincidence, I just happened to go through Bristol tonight on my spring baseball trip (headed for Pittsburgh). NICE city (actually Tri-Cities area)... paper isn't too shabby.

This might be up my alley, but unfortunately I don't have the design skills needed. Shoot. Good luck to whoever gets this.

  3. Make a detour to Ridgewood barbecue on your way home. It is well worth the extra time.

Oh. My. God. I had Ridgewood for the first time.

I may drive back to Bristol/Johnson City/whatever just to get some more. Sweet Lord was that shit good.

I saw Ridgewood and had to post. It's just 10 minutes from my office. Love that stuff.

Also, congrats to Sam on the newborn! Good to see Farkas post!

I'm really not going back to Indiana. Basically, I'm just gonna walk the earth. You know, like Kane in "Kung Fu." ;D

I figured I'd beat y'all to the punch on the Samuel Jackson references, so there you go.

Actually, I am going back to Indiana to be ME of a small daily east of Indianapolis (and hopefully start an Indy-focused sports blog). And I am a proud Papa - which give me a chance to insert a picture of my adorable daughter. That's her under my name at left.

I'll be leaving Bristol on May 2, so I'm hoping to help find someone to replace me before then.

My next gig is what's best for me and the fam (More responsibility, Mon.-Fri, day shift), but I do hate to leave the BHC. We really have a great staff here, and I think this is pound-for-pound the most productive and devoted sports staff I've ever seen, and I think we have the best section in Virginia with all we have to do on a small staff (47 high schools, seven colleges, NASCAR, NHRA etc. with four full-time writers).

The next SE will need to design, though I did hire a full-time desk guy who puts the section together five times a week. There is a lot of office work with phones, agate etc., but it's really a good job. Demanding, stressful, sometimes frustrating, but good. This is not an easy area for an outisder to get to know, but the veterans on the staff make it easy. Allen, Bucky and Tim have been here through thick and thin, and I defer to them a lot. Brian has been a good addition as well and does a heck of a job. I basically just give them deadlines for features and whatnot and give them room to do their jobs and they do it well.

I'd strongly reccomend this job to anyone who wants to be an SE. If anyone wants more information or has any questions, feel free to drop me an e-mail. Mike Farkas handed the place off to me in good shape, and I'd like to do the same to the next guy.

    Sam,

I've heard nothing but good things about you from Farkas and the staff there. Best of luck in Indiana. Before you leave, give Crigger and Teague a hard time about giving you quality photos. Those two pulled one of the best practical jokes on me when I was at the BHC.

I have to disagree with Alpha Bits' anti-Foster tyrade. In my time at the Bristol Herald Courier J. Todd Foster was always professional and helpful; he was certainly never a micro-manager. I have much respect and appreciation for what Foster is doing with the BHC.
