Sports Writer, Flagstaff, AZ

Discussion in 'Journalism Jobs' started by big green wahoo, Apr 27, 2008.

  1. From JJobs.com. I've always heard Flagstaff was a great place to live, especially if you like the outdoors. But I know nothing about the paper.

The Arizona Daily Sun, a 12,000-circulation daily in Flagstaff, has an opening for a full-time, multi-platform sportswriter.

Reporting experience at a daily newspaper is not required, but it will move you to the front of the line.

The reporter is mainly responsible for coverage of preps and the Division I Northern Arizona University women’s basketball team, but will also be expected to contribute to youth and recreational sports coverage throughout the year.

The ideal candidate has a firm grasp of AP style and has the ability to write clear, concise stories on tight deadlines. Familiarity with NewsEditPro IQue and InDesign is a plus.

The reporter will also take his or her turn on the desk, contribute story ideas and play a key role in directing coverage, both in print on and the Web. Must have valid drivers license and reliable transportation. No phone calls, please.

Those interested should send cover letter, resume and clips in hard copy only to:

    Keith Jiron

    Sports Editor

    Arizona Daily Sun

    1751 S. Thompson St.

I remember the football beat writer position was open last winter, don't know about this one. Probably the same pay?

Flagstaff's a little pricey. I would have jumped on this if I was single. But $25000 is going to get you much in Flag. You could always live in Williams 30 miles away.

I've always wanted to move to Arizona, but the time just isn't right at the moment. Hopefully it will be one day. :(

When I was much younger, I worked at Office Max in Flag for $6.00/hr. Luckily I paid only $200/month in rent to share a 1 bedroom.

I worked at Granny's Closet for like $2.00 an hour about a million years ago. Still love Flagstaff, despite the urban crawl, smog and high cost of living.
This would be a fun job, if you didn't have to live in a hostel.

Why is this paper only 12k in circulation?

Is there a regional paper that keeps it in check or is 12k appropriate for a metro of 127k?
