No way that one's real. Nobody covers the NHL anymore.

I've seen a few gamer leads that didn't have a score or didn't even make clear who won.

I also saw, in a paper I had just left, a basketball gamer that led something like "Basketball is a game with a round ball and a hard floor" or something to that effect. I laughed, I cringed, I was glad I didn't work there anymore.

I saw one during the Super Bowl that had a poem to start. Someething along the lines of "The Giants have strength and they have might. They are coming to Pheonix (even though the game was in Glendale) looking for a fight."

I might have exagerated. I'll have to look around and see if I can find it.

Sorry to bump this. I almost wanted to make a new thread for this.

It might have existed, really. Or maybe I just made it up. Or maybe I'm smoking crack. Or maybe I can't spell Phoenix. Well that's not a maybe.

I think that's why Pratt has a different sports editor.

  11. A stringer, who lasted at my last shop all of two weeks, turned in this prep soccer gem:

"The Podunk High School boys soccer team hosted the Lions on Tuesday night. No, these aren't the Lions you're thinking about. No, these were the Loserville Lions."

The stringer went on to include these nuggets:

"Then, there was halftime." (No halftime score given).

"Then they scored, then they roared, and then, the game was over."

Final score was finally given in the last graph. Article was around 4 inches of copy.

I can't stand what I call "101 ledes." That is to say, ledes that explain the basics of the sport the writer is covering.

"In basketball, turnovers can be the death of a team. Friday night, Dipshit High committed 44 of them in a loss to East Studs Central."

    Yuck, yuck, yuck.
