Even funnier, that's the one activity that doesn't hurt my back.

21, consider the surgery as a last-ditch alternative.

Mrs. Beanpole had a similar problem, with the herniation at L4-5. Hers was bad enough that she had constant pain as well as numbness in her foot. Surgery was decently successful, although her foot is still partially numb.

The problem? Two years later it herniated again, for no aparent reason. Her doc said that once you have the surgery, you run an increased risk for more back problems down the road.

If you can rehab your pain away, by all means do so.

I have a herniated L4 and L5 (four years ago next week!) and my specialist told me to avoid surgery except if I'm in constant pain.

21, I had the exact same problem last June. I limped around for about 3 months with lightning shooting down my left leg. I had the surgery in September where they shaved away part of the bone to take the pressure off the nerve. I've never regretted it. I had the pain in my leg for so long, I had forgotten what my leg felt like "normal.
The surgery was successful. I haven't had an ounce of trouble with it since. My lower back is sometimes stiff, but nothing that even comes close to the pain I was going through.
If it happened again, I would have the surgery again in a heartbeat.
My advice - have the surgery.

I had the same exact L4/5 injury almost four years ago. It was eight months of agony, never sitting down, eating while lying on the floor, covering events while standing up. Physical therapy helped for a couple of months, but the problem got worse when a piece of the disc split off and floated around in my spine, eventually pinning against a nerve.

Did the surgery after hearing all the horror stories. Surely, it is hit or miss but mine was a dead-on hit. Three weeks after surgery, I was back out running. Two months after surgery, back to the basketball court and the golf course. Only the occasional, few-day flare up now and then. No big deal.

Best of the seven surgeries I've had in my life.

I'm so confused. Grateful and fascinated, but completely confused.

I really appreciate all the feedback. Trying to envision telling my doctor, 'well, shecky and kokane really think I should do it, but beanpole and the rest of the crew say maybe no. And Moddy, who might be Bob Knight, says if surgery is inevitable I should just lay back and enjoy it.'

I've got this bottle of Vicodin laughing at me because I don't want to go there. Might have to pretty soon.

Take the Vicodin, let the cool wind blow.

A warm bath might provide some fleeting relief.

You'll get vicodin post-op, so that's something to look forward to.
