Want an exciting summer of covering Major League Baseball? MLB.com offers 30 reporting internships to aspiring sportswriters. These internships are designed to give associates the full range of experiences that comes with covering a professional team. Each associate will work closely with a site reporter to give visitors to a team’s Web site all the information they need to follow the team from Opening Day to season’s end. Each Major League club will have one associate reporter.

We will be looking for talented college juniors and seniors, as well as graduate students, for our 2008 Summer Internship Program. You must be a student in the Fall 2008 semester to be eligible. The application deadline for all internships is Nov. 30.

We expect each intern to spend a minimum of 10 weeks in the program, dates determined by a person’s college schedule. Also, the more flexible an applicant is in terms of which Major League city he or she can work in, the better the person’s chances of being selected. Our associated reporters are paid $500/week.

Applicants should submit a resume, 5 to 10 published articles (no columns should be included), a list of references and a 750-word essay on why MLB.com should pick you? Please use the essay as a way of showing your creativity as a writer; in short, it should be more than a simple cover letter.

Associates are responsible for arranging their own housing and transportation.

Applied for this last year. Never heard back. You stay classy MLB.

 

In MLB.com's defense, they only take the top 30 candidates of about 600 applications. It's probably the best, and hardest internship to attain.

 

Par for the course there. Don't sweat it.

And that $500/wk is barely a step up from slave wages considering the workload they heap upon the interns.

On the bright side, working there will either land you a job, b/c they almost never hire people whose resumes are longer than half a page, or send you running and screaming into another career.

 

I know it's a lot of work, but if there are college kids on here that aren't sure if it's worth it - it is. Neighbor of mine got an internship a handful of years ago and loved it.

But if you need the money, you can make 500 bucks a week working at Target.

 

Young man who was a freelancer for me for 3 years got an internship last year and loved it. The 500 bucks was OK, but the experience was priceless. I'd highly recommend going for this.

 

Is this the same recruiter as in previous years? When I applied a few years ago the guy was Justice B. Hill.

 

Had this internship before. I can't imagine a better sports journalism internship out there. For any students or recent grads looking for a stellar internship, this is the place to go. No doubt about it.

IIRC there might not be 30 internships available. I think previous interns can be asked to return, but with a different team.

 

One of my good friends did this for two summers. The ability to network is second to none.

 

And you get to work for a guy with a rhyming name.

 

Great point. The ability to do that is often underrated.
