It won't happen, but I'd like to see Gary Patterson get a shot at the gig. He's 62-25 in eight years at TCU, consistently fields excellent defenses and has just about maxed out what he can do at the school.

If the Wikipedia is to be believed, he turned down $2 million a year to take the Minnesota job in January 2007.

I have it on good authority that Lane Kiffin is currently working out contract details with UT's AD Hamilton; and that Kiffin's daddy is included in the deal.

So I have to ask this, as a Vol fan, should I be happy about this hire?

Is Orgeron part of the package?

Spurrier finished ahead of Urban Meyer in the SEC East his first season at USC, and was a field goal away from going to the SECCG. And they're (probably) going to a NYD bowl this year.

That's the entirety of it, of course, but there it is.

I'd think so, yes. It's been said that Kiffin is a great recruiter, and his ties to the west coast could bring a few of those Calif. kids to Knoxville. He'd be a breath of fresh air in a program that flat out stinks right now.

There are certainly worse options than Kiffin.

Kiffin may do a great job at Tennessee if he gets the gig - but his lack of a track record compared to every other coach in the SEC, except for Croom, seems like a reach for a program that shouldn't have to reach.

    From AP....

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton says he has not offered the Vols coaching job to anyone yet.
There was at least one news report Wednesday that Tennessee had made an offer to former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin and that Kiffin was believed to be assembling a staff of assistants.
Hamilton says any report of a job offer is “incorrect information” and that the search process is ongoing. He said he hopes to name a coach soon.

Sounds like UT might want to know what kind of staff he can bring to Knoxville. He didn't get a chance at Oakland.

I hope it works for Tennessee fans sake, I just don't know if it will. Which is why I'm surprised the Vols went with Kiffin. The track record just isn't there.
