The Sports content department at the Naples (Fla.) Daily News has an immediate opening for a full-time Staff Writer to help cover our 13 area high schools, spring training, professional golf tournaments, arenafootball’s Florida Firecats and assist with coverage of the Florida Everblades. The position includes coverage of all high school sports through game stories, features and breaking news, and coordinating with the host of the Prepzone Playbook Webcast at naplesnews,com. The regular work week is Monday through Friday but weekend and holiday work is required on occasion. The successful applicant will have the ability to juggle daily stories, quick turn-around postings for the Web and enterprise work. Ability to shoot video or willingness to learn other multimedia story techniques is a plus. Preferred applicants must be able to generate innovative story ideas, possess an ability to tackle both in-depth and quick-hit stories, be a stickler for accuracy and making deadline, and must exude a teamwork attitude. The preferred applicant will have an appreciation of collaborative journalism and Wikinomics. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with a major or minor in journalism, communications, English or a related field. Applicants must submit copies of at least six news or feature articles published in a college, weekly or daily publication within the past two years. Anyone familiar with this area have any info on the cost of living?

 

Paul, the asst. sports editor, is a good dude. A lot of fun to hang out with.

 

Just don't talk any crap about the White Sox or the Bears.

They pay a young person's salary to live in a town with no young people. Outside of spring training, all the popular sports are more than an hour away.

It's not a bad gig, but it's not a great place to live for that salary.

 

Lots of retirees

 

They have a great, great Web operation. Part of it has to do with an affiliation with a local TV station (I think E&P did a piece on them a few years back), but their Naples Studio 55 is some of the best Web-based video you'll find. I don't know much about their sports department, but when it comes to multimedia, they are way, way ahead of the curve, IMO.

It's a former Rob Curley stop. He's now at the Las Vegas Sun, which now has a great Web operation too. He's formerly of the Lawrence Journal-World, which has a great Web operationn, too.

I just wonder how profitable it is to bring in a high-roller Web team. But it does make your product look good.

 

Anyone have any clue what sort of salary range this position might offer?
