I'd be stunned if he leaves. He can't get a better deal anywhere else.

Now if the Tide goes into the shitter and he gets canned, that's another story.

Yeah, Richmond had a notebook saying that some sources (i.e. boosters) were saying Groh was done. There has to be some sort of change there, though. Lil' Groh is an incapable offensive coordinator. And it's shameful that it took three years for the Cavs to finally give Vic Hall a chance on offense. Disgraceful. That was Al Groh's stubborness coming through. I understand that Hall was a huge part of that defense, a captain. But there were capable replacements, like Chase Minnifield.

Another thing, when you're at UVa, and you're trying to compete with a monster in state like Tech, you CANNOT miss on a high-level recruit like the Cavs did on Peter Lalich. They absolutely blew that one, and it set the Cavs back two, maybe three years.

UVa's been fine defensively. The offense has been terrible, even during the Gator Bowl year. That falls on Mike Groh. I wouldn't be surprised if Littlepage mandates that move be made, if only to save his own ass.

Saban (more accurately his agent, Jimmy Sexton) will start threatening to go somewhere else very soon, especially if the Tide wins out.

His NFL flameout has damaged his marketability in the league, but all Sexton has to do is create the impression somebody is interested, and Bama will have to pay up (more than they are already). It's all about leverage.

He won't get any more leverage. No NFL team would pay him what he would want based on what he did in Miami. No college team can afford to come even close to the $$$ he's getting from Bama.

He might have the best coaching contract in sports.

And I still don't think he'll be there longer than five seasons.

All Sexton needs to do is make Bama think somebody might up the ante for Saban, and it's as good as if somebody really does. Of course it would have to be someone irrational and crazy, but it doesn't matter if they're irrational and crazy if they have money.

Watch for the mysterious "Saban-to-Raiders??" stories to start leaking out very soon.

Saban is back in the NFL in a two years, especially if he wins a national title with Bama.

If he wins a title at Bama, he will be almost inarguably the best college coach of the last 20 years.

The only thing left for him to do will be have success in the NFL.

But would any team pay him and give the kind of control he would want to make the jump? I doubt it.

Rocky Long is rumored to be headed to Okie State as their DC, according to the Tulsa World. If so, the Cowboys just got a lot better. (and everyone in the Pac-10 breathes a sigh of relief because nobody wanted to see him back on the West Coast unless he was on your team.)

Don't be surprised if Lalich is a starting quarterback next year, or in 2010. He's been very impressive as a scout team QB, has a great arm, some smarts, and is now working with guys that know something about how to run a pro-style offense.

Plus he'll probably get this year back as a redshirt and still have three years of eligibility remaining starting next fall. Some on the Left Coast see him as the Matt Moore II story.

This is how Charlie Weis got Notre Dame to pony up that ridiculous 10-year extension three years ago. Guess we'll see if history is stupid enough to repeat itself.

He's a man! He'll be 48 when his contract expires!

Never say never. After all, the Lions did give Matt Millen the keys to the team and Saban probably has an ounce more football knowledge than Millen.
