Well Poz did not win explanatory, so the ever-illusive quintuple-crown of sports writing goes un-achieved yet again.

Big ol' thumbs-up on daily section to Toby Carrig, who put together our football-tab exchange here. Great to see.

Typo on an earlier post. The Charlotte Observer couldn't possibly have been named a top 10 section.

    That's pretty shitty.

People may not be bitter. Frustrated, yes, but bitter?
Many of those are butt-busting people who do their damndest to compete for national acclaim. My department and paper is very much among those. My first year there, we won ah honorable mention for project reporting from a guy who really didn't write well but through the editing efforts of myself and another person in the newsroom, we made it into a really good story, and by damn it got recognized. It was a story on Tommy John injuries and he went to great efforts to quote Dr. Jobe and major league players as well as little guys. Weird it was that the story didn't get any other recognition and honestly, I thought it was good but there have been far better pieces of work that have gone out from better writers who felt they did a great job on it. And I can attest to that. Those pieces required very little editing!

I suppose by winning one so unexpectedly so early in my time where I'm at, we thought others would be reachable, even as we believe the product has improved. But that hasn't happened. We did a story very similar to one Gannett gave a "Best of Gannett" award a year after our submission. Same graphics, ironically. Similarly designed package, But one was the Detroit paper and the other was a little guy. Hey, teams have high expectations, produce good efforts, and still lose. It's part of life. But it's frustrating, especially as you watch your resources get cut and you realize you're working twice as hard on the stuff you're producing now as compared to 10 years ago, or for that matter, even three years ago. With the most recent cuts, if we don't drop to the lowest group, I know we don't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning anything. So I can empathize with printdust and those other "bitter" people. More and more, it just doesn't seem to be an even playing field. That's no one's fault, it's just reality, but it hurts.
