Wow. I'm shocked to see this. Went to college in that town just a few years ago. The SE who was at the paper at the time was the brother of the coach of the college's mens basketball team. It was a one-person sports staff at that time, and I can't imagine that's changed, which leaves me with the question of what happened to that SE. He was a really friendly guy, but the sports section always left a lot to be desired.

I wouldn't be shocked if one of the local college paper kids takes this. A large part of the staff there went to Local U, or did as of a few years ago.

 

Ah, the Daily Distress ... i haven't seen that in almost 15 years. i wonder if it's changed any.

 

Hey the head football coach at this place was fired recently after it was uncovered that he was having an affair with the daughter of the AD. My cousin is going to play football there next year and got a call from a defensive coach asking him if he had heard the news. Fun convo for an 18-year old to have I guess.

 

I covered that coach for a season when I was in college there. Seemed like a nice guy. Went to the school's newspaper website and they, of course, don't have anything about the reason he was let go, although I guess that might be hard to verify to get into print.

I came across this while doing some research on my current applicants, and thought I should set the record straight in case any of you were thinking about applying.

I've been the sports editor at the Daily Express since August 2004. Bud Schrader, brother of men's basketball coach Jack Schrader, was moved to a sports reporter role at that time, and remains in that position.

Within sports, things have changed a great deal, and I'm looking for someone who can keep it moving in a positive direction when I become managing editor later this month. It is not a "sports copy desk" job, and I have no idea how Gatehouse got the job description I put together and turned it into the thing that appears on its website.

I'd say the town isn't the same since they stopped with the 99 cents burger-and-fries baskets at the Golden Spike.

But as long as the Ronzas are still coming out of Pagliai's, and Pancake City is still slopping out its biscuits and gravy special, all is right with the world.

Is the Blue Moon Cafe still hanging in there?

 

Wow! The Golden Spike, the Blue Moon Cafe -- does that take me back a few years! One community pillar you left out: the radio station known as "the X, the Tri-State's real rocker." I believe they're still on the air and as independent (non-corporate) as ever.

Yes, I spent a fun-filled year at "NEMO" in Kirksville. Lots of bad beer and euchre tournaments, but also some good times and a few local dives that had cheap eats for light-on-cash college kids. Long live the Golden Spike burger baskets.
