Here's hoping the extra c-note will be a sign that things are looking up for you. You'll be in my prayers.

I can't believe no one suggested upper-decking the kid or the Barons.

Congrats on a job well done and an appropriate reward, Johnny,

About time you caught a tailwind instead of a headwind.

    Dell tells me:

    1) It's up to me to get all the third-party software that came on the computer when I bought it but wasn't on the reinstallation disks that came with it;

    2) As of this morning, a replacement part (the entire flip screen and all wiring that runs through it) is on back order, and I'll get it when I get it.

    So, still broken.

I completely back this statement, as a Mac user. I saved for 6 months as a broke college kid to buy mine and haven't regretted it for a single second. It might take some time to adapt to the OS, but it's completely worth it. Don't buy into those stupid Windows commercials that compare Macs to PCs, or that send people out hunting for a computer for "less than $2,000 or $1,000." You can find what you want for that cheap, yeah, but the difference is made up for in headaches.

I've never had a virus on my Mac. Ever. The worst problem I've ever had is that it'll freeze after I go a long time without restarting it or shutting it down, but that's nothing unusual.

Mac, all the way. And if all you need it for is writing and internet, you can get one for right around $1,000.

If you want any more info on Macs, PM me or just ask here. I'll do my best to follow this thread. But they're totally worth it.

    JD,
Sorry to read about the bad breaks you've been getting. What kind of software are you looking for? I might be able to help you out there.
Just give me a buzz and let me know.
I hope things start looking up!

I convinced Dell to send me a replacement laptop. The best they would do is a refurbished one. Two weeks after sending the Barons receipts for the broken chill mat and the data recovery, no check from them.

Whatever happened to honoring a warranty and making good on something you did to someone? I'm finding again and again lately the last thing anyone wants to do is to take responsibility and make restitution.

Last time I bought something for Dell, a printer, the service person suggested getting everything from Dell that is refurbished. He said refurbished is usually not something that is returned, but something that is ordered and then the order is canceled because the person couldn't pay for it or because they found it cheaper somewhere else. Once they start packing it, they can't ship it as new.

I have a refurbished printer that went for $100 bucks but got for $39 (and that included ink). Have had it for two years, no problems so far.

So that's why their prices are so high. They have to repackage and sell at a lower rate because people found things at a lower rate.

    Vicious cycle.

I think mostly it is companies that purchase 20 or 30 laptops and then cuts down to a smaller order.
