    This is from journalismjobs.com

    Company: The Argus-Press
    Position:
    Sports Editor
    Location:
    Owosso, Michigan
    Job Status: Full-time
    Salary: $25,000 to $30,000
    Ad Expires:
    July 20, 2009
    Job ID: 1062714
    Website: http://www.argus-press.com

    Description:
Because of a promotion, The Argus-Press of Owosso, Mich., has an opening for a sports editor. Candidates should have daily newspaper experience and be competent in writing, page layout and editing copy. Online skills would be welcome. We need someone who can step in and manage a two-person writing staff, direct coverage of 10 local high schools, various amateur events and even the occasional college or professional competition. The Argus-Press consistently wins awards for its sports coverage from both the Associated Press and the Michigan Press Association and we expect the incoming sports editor to continue that tradition. Direct inquiries to Dan Basso at rbasso@chartermi.net.

Not sure, slappy ... Dan Basso is currently the sports editor, per bylines on the Web site. Sounds like perhaps he is the one being promoted ... which would mean that a new SE would have the predecessor looking over his shoulder. NOt always a good deal ...

I know nothing about the job, except that Dan Basso is a good guy. And I almost killed him with a golf ball once.

Dan Basso is a good guy who has been there quite some time. It might NOT always be a good thing to have your predecessor looking over your shoulder, but you can't undervalue having someone right there who knows the job inside and out.

Mike Eckert worked for Basso for a couple of years in Owosso and moved on to the Record-Eagle in Traverse City. The section has won quite a few awards over the past few years.
