Sports/Desk Editor, Vallejo, Ca.

The Times-Herald, a seven-day per week morning newspaper in the San Francisco Bay Area, has an immediate opening for a SPORTS/DESK editor, who also would be WRITING prep sports and from time to time features on area pro teams.

As a member of our quasi-universal desk, the applicant would be involved not only in writing, but in many aspects of daily production including laying out the sports section as well as helping with news pages. Pagination and multi-media skills a plus.

Was curious to see how many folks were still standing in Vallejo, and there are no copy editors listed. Odd.

 

As far as "salary requirements" .. would that be a ballpark figure you are expecting?? And how would one go about setting that figure for purposes of a job application??

 

I interviewed at this paper when they had a sports reporter position open about six months ago and it may have been the worst experience of my life. Ted Volmer, the editor, was the rudest and most unprofessional person I have ever met. After I drove 14 hours on my own dime to come there he told me I should aim low in my career goals (because I said I wanted to be a columnist one day), asked if I was an only child (because I told him I thought I was good at what I did) and was an outright ass the whole hour I was there. The sports guys, Dan and Derek, were really nice guys though. There was no SE at the time and more than half the desks in the newsroom were empty. One of them did nothing but layout, which is why they needed a reporter because they were only covering a handful of games a week. Derek and Dan were supposed to be co-SEs, but apparently that didn't work out.

 

I'm sorry about your experience, Lions. An editor has no business discouraging a young journalist. There are enough other places to find that in our business.

Not really sure what he meant with the "only child" thing ... at any rate, it had nothing to do with the interview at hand. I hope you didn't let that bad experience sour you on the business. There are a lot of good people out here.

Sorry to hear that, mate. Maybe you're better off NOT working there.

No reason for someone to ever be rude to an applicant. It's a small world and no need to burn bridges.

 

Is Vallejo as rough as E-40, Mac Dre and all the other Bay Area rappers say it is?

Yeah when I got there at 8 pm on a Sunday the only thing open was liquor stores and porn shops, seriously. The downtown was pretty much empty storefronts. The surrounding cities seemed OK, stayed in Belencia and that was nice.

 

Is it outrageously expensive to live there, like much of the Bay Area seems to be?

 

For Bay Area standards, it's one of the cheaper parts. I had a friend who worked on the copy desk there for a few years and she commuted in from Vacaville which isn't too expensive. I crossed paths with the old SE once and he said he commuted in from downtown Sacramento.

FWIW: It's a Singleton shop.

I worked at one of the neighboring MNG papers for a few years and had nothing but good experiences with any of the sports people in Vallejo.
