SI.com's "Things We Miss in Baseball."

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by DanOregon, Aug 11, 2009.

  1. OK. Announcers who were known more for being announcers than for being the guy who screams "thaaaaaaaaa Yankees win!" or the ridiculous thing the Mariners announcer says about Grandma getting out the mustard after a grand slam.

In other words, announcers who understand that we tune in to see/hear the game and not to hear them talk. (Unless it's Vin Scully, in which case it's both.)

Back to the things we miss. Baseball games sponsored by beer companies.

Gates Brown was familiar with the "waste band." From our own Dave Kindred:

You mean guys who would never have yelled, "Open up the window, Aunt Minnie!"
Or "You can kiss it goodbye!"
Yeah. Good thing there were none of those in decades past.

Vin's storytelling has gotten a little out of hand in the last few years. Put out a CD and be done with it.

Vin is/was the greatest, but Vin is also a gasbag.

I miss Joe Garagiola and Tony Kubek together on Saturday afternoons. I also miss Joe telling a catcher to go practice catching foul tips.

I like it to an extent, certainly liked it more when I was very young. The Paul Harvey-esque bit he does between innings is the best place for it. But I don't want to hear about Fats Fothergill or descriptions of Ryan Roberts' tattoos in a 3-2 game in the middle innings. If my own grandfather did the same thing I'd ask at some point if I could be excused.

I want to say Game Five of the '84 WS was a Sunday. I remember sort of being a Padres fan, b/c my Little League team was the Padres, and being bummed I had to go to school the next day and catch all sorts of scorn for the Tigers crushing them.

That Kirk Gibson homer was freaking epic, BTW. Who knew it wouldn't even be in the discussion as his greatest moment?

    According to this:

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/postseason/1984_WS.shtml

Game 5 was on Oct 14, 1984, which was indeed a Sunday.
