Not a terrible location, and I imagine the cost of living is pretty reasonable. Hutch has had a couple openings for writers in the recent past, but not an SE.

    What happened to Gene?

Gene is still there. There was some, how shall we put it, reassigning along with ASE Brad Hallier, as well as a layoff earlier this year. Harold Bechard became the SE, Gene the ASE, Brad just a writer. Harold is now going to, I think, the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Harold may be as nice of a guy as you'll ever come across in this business. Hope the new position is a good fit for him and a bit less stress. Also, Hallier is good people, so whoever takes this gig will have a quality reporter and all-around good guy to work with.

If my wife didn't have a contract that keeps us where we are for another two years I would be working on my application right now. Hutch is a pretty decent town to live in and not far from Wichita where there are a few more options in terms of shopping and what not. You would get to cover some great JUCO sports and Kansas's best high school football program. As of a few years ago they covered KU pretty regularly. I don't know if that's still true or not.

Not very closely I'd imagine, what with it being the NJCAA and all. The men's and women's basketball national tourneys are held in Hutch, and there's some damn good basketball being played there for a week in March.

Women's tournament is in Salina, about an hour north.

I know Hallier a little bit, and I know a guy or two who used to work in Hutchinson. They've had plenty of good people over the years who have done good work.
