His upside all dependant on ability to get a qb that can run his offense.

FHB - He is a great x/ o coach. I just don't think he would generate much excitement in fan base. They can do better.

Isn't that the upside of any offensive-minded coach? You could have said the same thing about Urban Meyer at Florida (or at Utah, for that matter).

And believe me, there are plenty of high school option quarterbacks who are playing DB or WR at big-time Division I schools. They might go to Notre Dame if they were given the opportunity to play QB.

Charlie Weis generated a lot of excitement when he first got to South Bend. Something about decided schematic advantages and all that.

I think winning inspires more excitement than a name does.

  4. Such a small margin for error, though. Look at Michigan right now.

According to CBS Sports, ND's strength of schedule this year is ranked 49th out of 120. Cincy's is 58th.

TCU, currently ranked fourth with an unbeaten record, has a schedule strength of 68.

Boise State, unbeaten and ranked sixth, has a schedule strength of 80.

Texas, unbeaten and ranked second, has a schedule strength of 41, just barely "tougher" than ND's.

Again, the idea that he's the perfect coach or should go to Notre Dame is debateable. But the idea that he wouldn't win there boggles my mind. I mean, he took guys that for 40 years had gotten pummeled by the Irish, guys no one else recruited, and did this...

    Which brought about...

Notre Dame's not going the NFL route this time around.

Mike Lombardi makes some interesting points in this column:

He argues that Weis bought too heavily into recruiting rankings rather than evaluating players based on his own judgment. Belichick would never do that.

I didn't realize that Weis' contract doesn't have an off-set clause. Bob Lamonte played Kevin White like a Johnny fiddling against Satan.

  9. I think this is true and I think that at least some of his assistants felt that way about his evaluation of h.s. talent, particularly early in his regime.

Is strength of schedule based solely on opponent winning percentage, or is it more complicated than that? Because if ND went undefeated, that would give their opponents six fewer wins and six more losses, probably pushing the SOS down towards Cincy.

No more than yours - and Boom's - desire to strike Paul Johnson is going too far as well.

No one was winning football games at The Naval Academy before Johnson got to Annapolis. And now he's winning with Chan Gailey's recruits in Atlanta. Running an unconventional scheme, running it well, running with players he didn't recruit and doing this all without bragging about a "decided schematic advantage."

Paul Johnson would be a terrific hire in South Bend. The only drawback - and this is picking nits - is that option football isn't considered glamourous and might not win over the kids who opt for style over substance.

I could see Charlie Weis winding up in Oakland if Weis felt that desperate for another shot at being a HC and didn't want to wait for Belichick to retire.
