Wow. Primo gig. Lage has done a wonderful job up there. Anyone know the scoop why (it appears) he's out? As I write this, I see he's at the Tigers game.

Ad says new person will be part of a two-person team.

So this could be a newly-created position, I believe.

In the very first line no less, huh? Nice job me.

Still, good to Michigan is finally seen as a two-person job.

If Dave Hogg wants and does not get this job, it is wrong on many levels. He's the awesomest get-no-credit-for-the-work-he's-done guy in Detroit since before Larry's time. And I'd wager Larry would say the same thing. So would Harry Atkins.

You said it perfectly, KJIM. Speaking as someone who knows Dave very well -- both as a former colleague in the business and as a mentor/friend since then, he is one of the best there is. Not just in Detroit, but in general. If he wants it, it should be his, no questions asked. And I hope he does.

Does Hogg already work inside the AP?

No, but he IS the second AP sportswriter in DET, only he's not employed by AP directly. If Dave got this job, the only difference in what's out there now is you'd see his name would finally be on everything he cranks out.

Really, I can't imagine anything else changing, because Dave already does the work of the second sportswriter. (Except he'd finally be eligible for insurance and all that, and Larry wouldn't have to staff all playoff games because Dave could finally get bylines.)

Honestly, in-buro, no one questions Dave because he knows better than any staffer there what's to be covered. He precedes Larry, for God's sake. He was Harry's go-to guy, too. There is no question he's No. 2.

I worked in the buro for 10 years before leaving the country. There were times, especially in the Harry-Larry transition and every Thanksgiving during HS FB championships -- that the buro would have crashed without him. I know I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw his initials on the stories.

I repeat: If Dave Hogg wants and does not get this job, it is wrong on many levels.
