I don't know why this school has them, but they do. They haven't won a game in almost three years. Guess it makes them feel big and important or something.

Last week, a local radio station tried to talk the ref at my game to wear a mic. He refused, mainly due to avoid the situation you just described.

Where we live, I've never seen microphones unless it's at Super Bowl games, which are at Gillette Stadium. Everyone in the press box usually has to guess what the referee is signaling for the penalty.

I was at a college football game a few years back and the SID was known for throwing anyone out who was cheering in the press box. He would do it at least once a game, usually a student volunteer or one of his own interns.

The home team throws a touchdown and someone starts cheering and the SID comes running around the corner and is shouting "OK, who was it? You're gone. Get out of my press box."

Turns out it was the school's legendary basketball coach, who was sitting in the press box doing an interview with SI.

The SID turned bright red and walked back to his seat where the hoops SID was sitting.

He turned to the hoops SID and said. "The next time he's in here, you better fucking tell me."

Anybody who ever refers to a press box as "mine" needs a punch in the face.

This SID is one of the best ever. It's said kind of in jest.

Maybe everyone in the pressbox should a) pay more attention to the game and learn the officiating signals; or b) get to the sideline where they should be anyway. Then there won't be any confusion.

Sideline? No way. I like my knees in their pristine condition, thank you.

Yeah, compared to some of the college press boxes I've been in, it makes you appreciate some of those who still believe that cheering should not be allowed.
