There's a big difference between having a private meal with someone and "bringing someone in" where most of the staff knows. This could be more private than most hires since there is the possibility of poaching someone from a competitor's staff.

I haven't been seeing names mentioned here. Just papers. And isn't it obvious candidates would come from the nearby papers?

    In this market, absolutely.

Fictitious names are for cowards. And didn't FDR once say "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself?"

Uh, no, they're not. Not always, and not only. God, I hate that cliched argument.

And, if someone posted under a real name, how would you necessarily know, with certainty, that it was their own actual name, anyway?

Real people don't usually use fictitious names because they have nothing to hide. Cowards, usually, have something to hide. And if someone posts under his or her real name and aren't truthful about it, *cough athletes who say someone hacked his Twitter account after posting trash talk cough*, then he or she is no better than the anonymous readers who criticizes them.

This place wouldn't work without fictitious names. Beneath the blather there's a lot of good, insider-y information about jobs and this industry that people post and are comfortable doing so because they're not using their real name. Hang around here long enough and you might learn some of the real identities (and some might reveal themselves), but by and large this place has worked just fine for a long time with the majority of posters using goofy names. I'm not usually one to tout post counts, but folks with a lot of 'em, like WriteThinking and many others, have been around long enough to be trusted.

In the meantime, Tim, will you please fill this job? :)

Play, this is about as unofficial as it gets but I've been told something could happen by Christmas.

Anyone heard whether they've started interviewing candidates? Brought anyone in?
