The truth about newspaper websites is you get what you pay for. The majority of the really good newspaper websites are more or less standalones. By that I mean they have a full-time staff whose sole purpose is updating and maintaining the site, not the print edition.

Too often, editors want a website but don't want to (or can't) hire for it. So they just dump the responsibilities of posting stories on the newspaper copy desk. Been there, done that. After spending the bulk of an 8-hour (or more) shift writing, editing and designing, how much effort and energy is there left to producing a quality website? It's an afterthought.

You get what you pay for.

While you're researching, trying "poring over various sights" and not pouring. Poring, as in "to read or study with steady attention or application: a scholar poring over a rare old manuscript."

The Tulsa World's SportsExtra site is fantastic. They have tons of info on every team they cover and it's easy to navigate.

No disputing those. But I ask again, do they have a full-time stuff dedicate exclusively to the site? Or are they asking print people to do the site as well as the print edition?
