    Here's a newbie question:

I see a lot of freelancers hee saying they're already credentialed.
I thought you couldn't get credentials without a publication (or site, respected blog, etc.) behind you.

Is it just a matter of these guys are experienced and know the PR people and SID's? Or is there more nuance to it than that?

    Thanks!

Most teams and events will not credential you unless you have a publication that has assigned you to a beat or a story. Some people may be getting a favor from a media relations director. However, I think the more common reason is that they have an assignment already but think they can handle extra work.

I've been credentialed to cover a team for a weekly or monthly publication before, which meant that I could often add extra freelance work since I wasn't on deadline every night. And there have been times when I've worked on deadline for two different publications simultaneously, although that's considerably more difficult (and not something many publications would want).
