Sporting News eliminates yearbooks

My deadline for the football one was early April, before some of my schools had even started spring practice. And the "newcomer of the year" pick was always a total joke/crapshoot because half the time your top FCS newcomer doesn't even transfer into the school until summer.

I understand why the deadlines were so early. But I also didn't get why the damn magazines needed to be on the shelf in mid-May. Late June/early July is plenty early for college football mags.

With smartypantsphones and innernets and the m3ps and all, I wonder if fantasy football publications are the next victims of emerging technology. Or is it still easier and more intuitive for most people to cross off names in a dog-eared copy of Fantasy Football Index?

Really enjoyed the yearbooks, though they were by far the best product put out by Sporting News.

I used to read all of the yearbooks every year until I started writing for them and I knew that every prediction was made months and months before fall practice even began and that if clowns like myself should be allowed to make predicitions, that magazine clearly cannot be taken seriously. :D

I think the idea was that most people would buy just one yearbook, so they had to be out there early. Otherwise, someone who had already bought Athlon or one of the others wouldn't be interested in buying another one later.

Right, they were almost always first to market which presumably was part of their financial success.

Yes, I always looked for the College Basketball one...in fact, I was just doing that a couple weeks ago when I stopped myself in the aisle and remembered this thread. :(

This year's college basketball is out. It's the last of the annuals.

sign of the times, (sigh) ... used to buy and devour preview mags as a young kid (back in the 60's) ...

That sucks. I always looked forward to their College Football Yearbook.
Found it less cluttered than the others.

I will miss them. Sporting News always did a fine job with its previews. They do come out ridiculously early, but they're a good way to primed for the season. Lot of info in one package.

They were definitely the best designed of the bunch.
