I've been following Ryan Greene's work for years, going back to his days covering Kansas, and he's a heck of a good journalist and innovative guy. Big-time loss for the LV Sun, and he's leaving some huge shoes to fill. Glad for the UNLV fans that they'll still get to enjoy his coverage.

Given all that's been said, thsi is still likely a better shop than my current gig. Any idea what this might pay?

I hope would hope it's in the 30s. Cost of living seems pretty pricey in the area.

That just seems so low for a college beat, especially one with such a great hoops program in that town. That being said, if it is the salary, that could tell you what you need to know about where the paper is at.

  6. Homey, they be some on beats makin' low dubs. Three stacks could be good money for some. All in the eye of the beholder, feel me?

How much can it really cost to live in Las Vegas these days? I hear that a lot of the new houses are vacant because of the economy etc. 30-40.000 should work pretty well in the area of UNLV and even a few miles from the University.

And think of all the extra cash you could make hitting the tables after you file your copy!

(More seriously, as someone notes above, the LV Sun has been essentially an insert in the LV Review-Journal for a number of years. I believe it's a remnant of a JOA. The Sun has done some good work, and at one point hired a bunch of very experienced people at decent salaries, but the product is very low-profile.)

Bill Barnwall, the pro football reporter from Grantland wrote a piece this summer about moving to Las Vegas. While he certainly makes a lot more than 30K he talked about how he leased a great apartment with a view for a price a lot cheaper than he got in Boston. I think you could find an apartment that would be a great deal given the disaster that is the Las Vegas reals estate market.

And entertainment would be cheap. The specials at the casinos may not have the best food but I suspect that it still beats most small town restaurants. And you could find some low priced shows to go to. I would think that the cost of living in Vegas is now comparable to a lot of smaller towns and if I was 25 I would find Vegas would be a lot more interesting place to work. The big risk is how long the paper lasts.

No crap, we all know Vegas is cool. But the paper is an insert in the paper of a former rival. More than a big risk.

Some reporter will get vastly underpaid to cover a decent college beat in a paper no one reads anymore. But when the paper inevitably fails, there's no guarantee there will be a next step. Not in this market.

I heard from the Twitter-Webs that this position was filled. I sent in an application, but didn't even get the benefit of a "we received your application, and will contact you with any questions" B.S. email. But I'm told there were more than 100 applicants for this one (thought many of them were stringer-calibre, so take that for what it's worth).

Anybody know anything on the hiree?
