Obviously he has done well doing his thing. It's interesting that in that piece he seems utterly devoid of any journalistic instincts.

As a Gawker editor, you might think he would be compelled to get this story and all the salacious details he could out there.

Instead, he is concerned only with finding out if the story exists and will come out in other publications and doesn't even ask Conlin if he did what he is accused.

(His denials and diatribes as described by AJ sound like every other guilty person in the hot seat.)

So are the musings of suicide:

    a) a pathetic attempt at garnering sympathy?

    b) the actual plans of a lowlife kiddie diddler intent on proving what a coward he's been all along?

    c) both?

This is just bizarre...what's he saying? His molestations are less bad than Sandusky's because they didn't span 19 years and weren't covered up by a university, plus he's more famous and his kids hung out with ballplayer's kids?

Is it fair to guess he never thought those emails would become public?

I guess you never really know what is going on with somebody. But this is a stunning fall from grace. My impressions of him were he was nastier than most sportswriters for (at the time) unknown reasons.

Tomorrow's Inquirer (links may already be up, just saw this on MCT) to report another victim coming forward.

Actually, I give Daulerio a lot of credit for printing those. He's clearly a huge fan of Conlin's, and is up front about that. He's also honest about the correspondence and the fact that, at one time, he was willing to help out Conlin. We've all been there before.

But, at the end of the day, he doesn't back down from the laywer and goes with the story. That's what you're supposed to do.

Agree completely. Just wondering if Conlin thought he was having a private conversation (which would have been insanely naive).

He likely did think he was having a private conversation, but unless they both clearly agreed in advance that it was off the record, that's another huge fuckup by Conlin. After 50 years in the biz, you'd think he'd know the rules - then again, I don't expect logical thinking from a guy who finger banged 7 year old girls. I never met the guy, but after learning everything I've learned in the last two days, I'm stunned he made it this long without some major career screwup. Those emails to Daulerio, wow.

With the e-mails to Daulerio out, which is worse: Conlin's e-mails or Sandusky talking to Costas via phone?

Just for the WTF reaction, I'd go with the call to Costas, but damn, those e-mails are just jaw-dropping.

In a lot of ways, A.J.D. is re-inventing sports journalism. You might not like it, but he's willing to get down and dirty with the nitty-gritty that most of us know aobut but would never write. I'm speaking specifically about the Brett Favre fotos. We've all known guys like this in sports and tacitly looked the other way. A.J. did not. He crossed a threshold in sports journalism and there's no going back.
As for his Conlin emails, they are fascinating. AJ comes off as clued-in, naive, loyal to a fault, a little cynical and, above all, honest. He didn't have to publish the emails. I'm sure he knew they show him in a not-so-flattering light. But he had an ``in'' with a major story in real time. So he ran with it, warts and all, and provided a rare glimpse of insight into a tragic man.
