Mike Dunsmore mistakes Kevin Bieksa for Ryan Kesler, and Bieksma doesn't just roll with it but says some pretty great, loaded things ... in his full-on Ontario accent. I know this is in the Stanley Cup Playoffs thread, but I thought it merited journalistic discussion.

Have you ever been duped or nearly duped? Was Bieksa right to say that Dunsmore shouldn't cover hockey if he can't recognize an All-Star center?

 

Bieksa. And he's right. He's a liar, but it doesn't mean the reporter wasn't a total fuckup.

 

When I was in college (mid-70s), a caller tried to spoof us on a deadline night at the college paper about a Yellow Fever outbreak.

He was very convincing, but no way you're going to go anywhere with a story like that without calling and checking carefully.

Which we did.

I'll admit, I just saw you posted it and didn't read what you wrote...but I also was kidding mostly.

I don't think I have ever gotten lampooned like that, but I have mistaken players (especially in football linemen during spring ball) and called them by name and they pointed me in the right direction.
Then again, how can you -- like Bieska said -- mistake an Olympian forward for a schlub blueliner?
I checked the reporter's twitter and he is trying to play it off like he knew.
Yeah. Right.

I once was in the New Jersey Devils locker room in Dallas, and it was just me and another reporter. The room had pretty much cleared out, and it was me and the reporter talking with Marty Brodeur.

The other reporter asked question after question for about 10 minutes, which Brodeur answered. Finally the reporters asks him, "So Scott, it seemed like Brodeur played well tonight," and Brodeur gets this goofy grin and says, "Umm, I'm Marty Brodeur." The reporter turned a shade of red that matched Brodeur's jersey, but Brodeur was really cool about it.

In fairness, Brodeur only was in a towel, but it's important to know the difference between Marty Brodeur and Scott Stevens. I can see where this can happen, but the advice of knowing who you're talking to is crucial. You're better off asking than looking like a complete idiot later.
