The thing about Hollie is I think her arrangements were all messed up. It seemed they turned every one of her songs into a production, a la her hero Celine Dion. I don't know if that's her choice, or that of the producers, but it screwed her over in the end.

For "I can't make you love me," it should have just been her and an acoustic guitar with a cello, like PP in his second song, or just a piano. Sometimes, and for me personally, oftentimes, less is more.

I think Hollie's ultimate problem was that she had exactly the same style as Jessica Sanchez, except that Jessica did everything better.

At this point, if Joshua Ledet doesn't win I'd rank it close to the shock the judges showed when Adam Lambert lost. This kid just gets lost in every song and becomes possessed. All three finalists are strong but I think especially over the last two weeks that Josh has separated himself.

Sad news if Jennifer Lopez is leaving Idol, if for no other reason than my favorite posts by my favorite bloggers will become a no-go. :(

I felt Ledet separated himself from the other two tonight. I also fully understand that may mean absolutely nothing when it comes to the voting.

But he nailed three songs in a row. Sanchez and Phillips each had a comatose-like song in there, although Phillips did, just like Randy said, turn in his best performance to date with the "We Have Tonight" closing.

  6. Backed Sanchez from the audition stage, and she's probably more commercially viable than Ledet, but what he did at the end of that Mary J som made me say "dayum" and I haven't said that in a long time during a live show.

The first performance of the night and the last were outstanding, the rest were just OK. Jessica's going home.

I teared up like a bitch during Phillips' performance. He should win this thing.
I agree - Jessica is out.

So, time to play a little catch-up on Idol.

Joshua Ledet “I’d rather be blind”—Man, what a song choice. While I was wondering why the judges would give this to Joshua as I really wasn’t too familiar with it, this song just fit Joshua’s voice so, so well. He did everything right here and he showed a poise here that the other contestants just don’t have. Joshua is the front-runner until someone else steps up and if he keeps up like this, you’re looking at your next Idol 8/10. Extra credit: Raise your hand if you were surprised Joshua couldn’t answer a sports-type question? Anyone? Anyone?

Jessica Sanchez “My all”—I don’t know how I feel about this song. The first verse, in particular, sounded like Jessica was trying to rush through the words. Like she was singing on speed or something. But at the same time, some of it was tremendously beautiful. Just spectacular. Other times, it sounded like shit. This is the type of song I think Jessica could grow into and, in a year or two, put out a song like this that just SLAYS the charts. She’s not quite there with it yet though. Beautiful but needs work. 6/10.

Phillip Phillips “Beggin”— This must have been the toughest week for Phillip, given that he only had control of one of his three songs and he probably wasn’t going to be given three DMB songs. I’ve got to say, though, that this kind of worked for me. I liked the fast, up-tempo and the way the drums and beat kind of complimented his voice. I found myself boppin’ my head to this and I hated this song before tonight;. Solid effort. Curious to see what else he’ll be doing tonight. 7/10.

Joshua Ledet “Imagine”—Are you kidding me? You’ve got to have some pretty big stones to not only select this but to try to do what Joshua did with this. If it works, you’re golden. If it doesn’t, you’re screwed. I think this fell somewhere in the middle. It was good, don’t get me wrong but it paled in comparison to Joshua’s last two efforts on the show Joshua has been in his sweet spot the past two weeks by adding a little anger and flavor to his songs and while this was pleasant to listen to, I don’t think it was particularly memorable. I, for one, can’t imagine wanting to see it again. 5/10.

Jessica Sanchez “I don’t wanna miss a thing” This song did exactly what the judges tried to do the last round but actually worked better. I thought it bold for Jessica to sing this song with Tyler righty there but I liked it. It was a little too karaoke-like for my liking and I don’t know if it highlighted the sweetness of her voice as well as it could have but it was a nice, little tender moment for Jessica, whose clearly going after the teen vote this week. It helps, of course, that she slayed those high notes. Absolutely slayed them. Nice performance. 7/10.

Phillip Phillips “Disease”— I don’t really know what to say about this performance. On the one hand, I like the way P2 adjusted the melody and chorus to fit his voice but he’s done that so many times this season that it’s almost ho-hum when he sings this way. I don’t think this was bad, per se, just kind of meh and on a night when Joshua and Jessica are doing so well, you need to do more than just the average. 5/10.

Joshua Ledet “No more drama”— What the f**k was Jimmy thinking? I get that he wanted to repeat last week’s effort by Joshua but I felt like this was a stretch at best. Last week, it seemed real for Joshua. This seemed like he was trying too hard to growl and yell and feel the song. Maybe I’m off base here but it just didn’t connect for me like I thought it would. 4/10.

Jessica Sanchez “I’ll be there”— Jimmy has redeemed himself. This song did for Jessica everything he said it would. It made her seem older yet still with a youthful charm. And, in my opinion, she absolutely destroyed this. I’m not a huge fan of this song but I loved this version of it. Great, great effort. 7/10.

Phillip Phillips “We’ve got tonight”—While I was watching Joshua’s last song, I got a text from Rhody talking about how amazing Phillip was here. He even went so far as to say it was the best performance of the season. While I’ll agree that it was great, I don’t know what Rhody saw here that I missed that would vault it into ‘best of the season’ great. It was great to see Phillip’s softer side and I loved that he did this without a guitar but to me it was a strong, strong effort … but still not as good as some of his other efforts this year. Eh, maybe Rhody is just secretly a middle-aged woman. 8/10.

    My rankings:
    Phillip Phillips

    Jessica Sanchez
    Joshua Ledet

My prediction: This is a tough one to call but I’m going to go out on a limb here and say Joshua gets the boot, if for no other reason than the fact that Phillip’s last performance is going to make him untouchable in the vote (He may even win the season) and Joshua’s long song just didn’t do that when compared to his nearly-flawless effort last week. Jessica had a great night overall and I can’t imagine she doesn’t get through. She's got the look and feel of a mega popstar. Joshua is more niche than she is. Going to be very, very interesting tonight.

'We've Got Tonight' is one of my alltime favorite songs; I don't think I've ever gotten through the Seger version without weeping. But other than loving PP in the black T and jacket, I wasn't moved by this. He'll probably win it all though...just seems the most commercial.

Jessica is so good that those amazing notes lose their shock value...we've heard them already. Her voice is astounding.

Joshua is truly an artist, and probably the most talented Idol in a long long time. Maybe ever. Just not sure who he becomes after Idol ends.

Really sad that any of these kids have to go home.

schiez, I've been with you most of the way this year, but our outlooks on Ledet last night couldn't have been more different. I thought he killed ... and killed ... and killed.

And like I said, the way I'm looking at them could very well be opposite of the way they'll vote. Plus, I agree with 21's assessment about his future (BTW, happy 22,000th). But if Ledet goes home, I will think they've erred.

I think he's in the John Legend vein. Absolutely.
