Librarians or information specialists or whatever they might be called probably have more marketable resumes than most reporters and editors.

Yes. It was a stupid business decision.

Almost anyone can cover cops and courts and regurgitate press releases to some extent.

Not many reporters know their way around a knife and fork that isn't plastic and encased in cellophane.

If the bulk of your content will be online, you want content that people will go to your website and read.

Ace makes the point. In this market, the food/restaurant writer is covering a topic of considerable interest to the community, and hence drives at least some readership. Letting this guy go isn't a symbol that ownership is callous and despicable, others of the layoffs do that. This proves ownership is callous, despicable, and doesn't know what the hell it's doing. Stupid and evil is an unbeatable formula for catastrophe.

Outside journalism, yes, but not if they want to stay in journalism.

    Trust me on that one.

Sorry. I thought it was a given that they would want to look outside journalism.

I just hope these cuts don't deprive us of stories like this:

I did not being up Brett Anderson's plight because I feared he would be reduced to begging outside Cafe du Monde. But his digital overlords said they were still committed to quality work with an emphasis on lifestyle stories. Now we all knew from the beginning it was bs. But it's important to call out liars for lying every time. If you don't, they eventually win.

My best friend is a newspaper librarian. As far as I know, they don't have their own message board, but she does enjoy it when I share funny stuff that gets posted on SportsJournalists.com.
