As part of creating a fully-integrated media newsroom, U-T San Diego is accepting applications for two-year multimedia/broadcast reporters. To ensure full consideration, please submit application by July 20, 2012. We seek candidates with bachelor’s degrees from an accredited institution who have demonstrated skills in reporting and writing for print, digital media platforms and social media, as well as experience in writing, producing and presenting news for broadcast. Successful candidates will report and write for all media platforms and produce packages for broadcast, including on-air reporting. Great to see openings at papers like this. Having said that, cost of living in San Diego is about 39 percent higher than the U.S. average, which is to say a $40,000 job there equates to about $29,000 in an average U.S. city.

 

Agreed, but kudos to Larry for being specific about the salaries so you don't waste your time if that range won't work for you.

 

Absolutely. Whether we admit it or not, it's first question we try to ballpark after a listing is posted.

 

Sure, the cost of living in SD is high, but what if you commute from Tijuana?

 

I applaud the honesty, but those salaries are fucking ridiculous.

Is there something there that says that all of the people hired will have to share a one-bedroom apartment?

 

They're not ridiculous if that's what the market supports though...and I have little doubt there are more than 100 serious applicants for each position already.

 

They are ridiculous for San Diego. I do know a guy relocating to Louisville who might have a place to sell. ;D

 

Relax guys. What the ad neglects to say is the U-T is offering free room and board and a use of a company car so these people shouldn't struggle that bad ... LOL!

 

Since the paper has given itself a college-like name (U-T San Diego), maybe it will put in dorms.

 

If you're young, single, these are great jobs. Yes, you're low man on totem pole, but you're in daily coverage of Padres or Chargers for the big local daily. High-exposure job that lets you get noticed for bigger jobs, either within the paper or elsewhere. I imagine they'll have a lot of interest.

 

The ol' "young and single" caveat. Whereas if you're young and married or older and single, you're probably screwed.

It's just super to know I've priced myself out of a lot of jobs simply because I got married at 27.
