I am posting an honest opinion.
Prove to me this director's work doesn't luxuriate in this kind of behavior.

Not to mention they would be to the moon regardless. Is anyone really not going to see this movie in theaters because of what happened? I'm sure there are some, but not anywhere close to enough to make it consequential.

Other than the premiere they cancelled in Paris, I doubt this did much of anything to stop people from seeing the movie. I know every theater around here was sold out all day and night yesterday and today.

I don't think he said that the rampage will jack up interest in the film, in Nolan's economic interests.

He said that it was in Nolan's economic interests to renounce the tragedy.

And when the authors wrote that document they could clearly understand technology decades into the future.

I always love it when people demand you prove a negative statement.

Nolan is in an impossible position by that standard, then. If he says nothing, he's seen as obtuse and unfeeling. He releases what I think is a pretty benign public statement and we cynically decide he's trying to protect his economic interests.

What should he have said? "Holy shit! I clearly caused this. Don't go see this film. I think instead of watching box office receipts or going to a premier in London, I'd better sit in the dark in my flat and reevaluate my life."

While it's naive to assume that every statement in this situation expresses genuine remorse, I also think it's incredibly cynical -- and reflects a depressing nihilism -- to suggest that Nolan gives a shit about how many people will go see the movie when he releases a statement like that. If you're an artist, if you actually value the medium as something more than money-making exercise, then Nolan's statement seems totally reasonable. Sitting in a dark movie theatre is an exercise in escapism, in fantasy. We do it because we can feel safe to dream of lives that are unlike our own. Holmes did violate that sanctuary. And yes, for someone like Nolan, the theatre is a sanctuary.

Cynicism about everything is just a foolish as cynicism about nothing.

I actually did some research on this for a grad course. One of the studies I remember suggested that violent media didn't seem to have much of an effect on average teens. However, it did seem to make those who were already at-risk, which was defined by a number of factors, more violent.

What pushes someone to this level of madness, though, is probably impossible to quantify.

    Again: I don't agree with 3OctaveFart.

But I didn't think his comment deserved a, "Shut the fuck up."

I mean, we're already not allowed to talk about politics here during an election year. Are we shooting for all non-sports news next?

If you've met directors, they care more about the art of filmmaking than money. Now if we're talking about executive producers, a little more cynicism is needed.

As someone who was raised by a father obsessed with films, watching a film is about escaping either the stress or boredom of life.

The mood of these films is far different.
They feed off the fear and anxiety of our present age in a way the others don't.
    They are all about subversion.
