That would almost be worth it just to read the archives from the 1880s

I left the Dodge City Daily Globe a year ago. I worked there for 14 months and I think I am the only person they have had in the sports department for longer than a year since 2006. I left a year ago and just about the whole staff has left and for good reason. This is a gatehouse owned paper and they have made it a pretty bad product and that is why every one left. It is now a one person sports staff. Sports is an inside section and has very little space. The newspaper is now mostly ads. It mostly covers Dodge City High School and Dodge City Community College and by the direction of corporate stopped most of its coverage of area schools, which once included 15 high schools, including Ashland, which just won a state championship in boys basketball. This is a place that will work you to death and pay you very little. When I started, it was my first job out of college and I was paid less than what i made in high school working at a grocery store deli. As far as travel, when I left Gatehouse wasn't letting us go anywhere to cover games, including state tournaments. Dodge City is in the middle of nowhere, far away from everything. Wichita is 2 hours, 45 minutes away, but I didn't think much of that city. Kansas City and Denver are both around 6 hours away and Oklahoma City is almost five hours. But it's not all bad. Dodge City is decent sized and has a casino, a small mall and an arena. The high school is decent in sports and has friendly coaches. When i was there, the football team was a game away from the state championship and blew a 28 point lead. The basketball team is always good and makes state almost every year.

My former boss worked there for a while in the late 90s or early 00s. He knew his time was up when the higher-ups stopped telling him what time staff meetings were being held. He only found that out when he walked in on one that was being held without him.

Last I heard, the Globe's pages were being designed in Pittsburg.

None of those people are there now. There are only three people who were there when I was there the last time.

Well...I decided to return to Dodge City and it's crazy that I've received a NUMBER of calls welcoming me back. By the way, the last person who was here more than a year in RBUCHAN's post was me in 2007. Thanks guys for all the thoughts while I was away. This is definitely a new chapter in my life.

I'll take places you couldn't pay me $1 million to live in, Alex.
