That is AWESOME news for Josh. I only know him via emails, but he is a peach and I'm thrilled for him.

I am late on this, but wanted to thank Andy and the others for the kind words about me now that my hiring has been announced. I appreciate that very much. This is a great opportunity. I am excited about what we have planned and thrilled to be part of an incredibly talented and dedicated team.

Congrats, Josh. Well deserved for a hard-working Syracuse grad.

Josh, is it true there are still many hires to be made?

It's no secret that they're hiring several more writers...

Figured as much. Also heard from s.e. who said their major media org's hiring freeze might lift in September. Would be big news if it happened ... will post more when I can.

Had lunch with a friend today who on Monday accepted the college football position. From what he was telling me, the hiring process was indeed hampered a bit by the Olympics (in response to what Mizzou posted). And apparently there will be a different level of depth (read: more in-depth and investigative work) with the USAT web stuff vs. the USAT print product.
BTW, there were questions about relocating. My friend told me he's not moving right away, but will be eventually (probably after the college football season is done). Sounds like they wanted him somewhere in the Central U.S. for travel considerations, but he got to choose ultimately where.

Dan Wolken, formerly of The Daily and The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal, and George Schroeder, of The (Eugene, Ore.) Register-Guard and a Sports Illustrated contributor, both announced today on Twitter they were teaming up to cover college football for USA Today.

Very happy for George. He's a pro, and a wonderful person.

Will they hire some of the good folks they let go?
