We’re looking for a strong leader responsible for taking our local sports coverage beyond traditional prep games.The sports editor will work with a sports writer, freelancers, unpaid contributors, interns and community groups to cover prep sports, a growing Division II university, recreational leagues and everything else sports in the Tri-Cities.
The sports editor supervises one full-time sports reporter; and writes, edits and paginates stories. We are looking for a leader that can take sports section to the next level for content, design and multimedia. This position requires a person who can communicate well, train and coach reporters, edit copy and produce attractive pages on deadline and grow our digital portfolio.
Our sports pages have always reflected the community, but there are opportunities to improve in the digital sphere including expanded social media usage and multimedia presentations. We seek an editor who will hit the dugouts for great daily game coverage and go beyond the outfield for those unique features and athlete profiles.
The Progress-Index is a 12,000 circulation daily newspaper that offers a competititive compensation and benefits package.
Petersburg is a historic town with a growing, vibrant arts community. We are two hours from the beaches and mountains and 2 1/2 hours from Washington, D.C.
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and three years on a daily newspaper. Knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop and social media are basic requirements. How many places in Virginia call themselves Tri Cities? I was thinking Bristol.

 

Those are correct, Moddy. And those are the cities I thought of when reading the ad, too. Didn't know there was another Tri-Cities.

 

Three, actually. Kinda. Some people still call northwestern Chesapeake, western Portsmouth and northeastern Suffolk the Tri-Cities, but outside of a few businesses and the ODU Tri-Cities distance learning center, I don't know how many people use it in their day to day dialogue. At least North Carolina comes up with different names for their three-city units (Triangle, Triad).
