Do you buy his explanation? It's certainly believable.

  2. So who was Te'o hanging out with in Hawaii?

If you've seen Catfish, (the movie or TV show) this isn't so hard to believe.

Very possible that he even lied to his folks about "how they met" or the extent of their relationship, because an internet only relationship would be embarrassing, and draw questions/doubts.

I don't see any reason to suspect this was cooked up to cover up his being gay.

Also, the fact that the person "Catfishing" him knew him in real life doesn't mean Te'o was in on it.

So either he is lying, or there were additional family hoaxers.

In the interest of veracity, which is a big deal today, I should point out that in the Mormon church being gay is not a sin. Acting on gay urges is.

  6. I buy part of his explanation. I can definitely see how it was a hoax and it was embarrassing for him to not only be in an online relationship but then realize it wasn't real. But he very clearly did some lying here, in my opinion. I just want to know when the lies on his end started and how long they lasted.

Finally, a rebuttal for the "Catholics vs. Cousins" t-shirt:

Everything he's telling us right now is a lie, plain and simple. His statement goes against everything he has said before about meeting her, going on vacation with her, etc. etc. And if he did meet her, though he now says he didn't, he would've known what she looked like and should have found her profile photos on Twitter, which were not her, a bit strange. This Ronaiah Tuiasosopo is someone he knew personally. There were pictures of them together and more to prove it. He's in on it and now, he's trying to cover his tracks by playing the victim. After he had supposedly learned he was duped and informed Notre Dame, numerous reporters who covered the BCS game have tweeted that he was still talking about her in the same fashion he always had.

The gay theory sounds nice but is completely irrational. So would Te'o's decision to cover up the fact that he was actually dating someone online that he had never met by creating a VERY detailed story.

True, but there are elements to the story where Teo says he met her in real life on the football field. Then they continued with their online relationship. That doesn't jive with a Catfishing story.

Was this an elaborate hoax to drum up support for a Heisman award and to inflate his draft stock? A lot would have to go right for that to even have an impact.

Ah, the loophole! You can be gay as you long as you don't, you know BE gay.
