We're hiring for a new position to help us transform sports coverage. This isn't a chance to sit on press row, watch games and transcribe predictable platitudes from coaches.

This instead requires covering the people, passions and issues of local sports in a way of interest to every reader, not just those with youngsters on a team. It goes beyond sports where scores are kept, extending to the mountain trails, streams, fields and scenic byways of our market.

The successful candidate will be able to work a broad and flexible beat to regularly find interesting people doing interesting things, the dramas of life and competition and people trying to be their best by doing their best in their recreational pursuits. And that candidate will have the skills to tell those stories with compelling writing and engaging video.

We're a successful farm team that's part of a larger organization, but also a place where serious journalists stick. While we will entertain select entry-level applicants with considerable college newspaper and daily newspaper internship experience, we consider this the ideal position for someone now on a daily or large weekly newspaper.

Our market stretches from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the George Washington National Forest. Hiking, mountain biking, camping and fishing opportunities abound. One of our towns is a growing tourism destination with bustling downtown streets lined with Victorian architecture, the other is a gateway to the Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway. Situated as we are amid a primarily rural area, we also offer a reasonable cost of living and easy driving access to Charlottesville, Roanoke, Richmond and Washington, D.C.

Newsleader.com serves up nearly 2 million page views each month to our subscribers, logging an average 170,000 monthly unique visitors. To apply for this position send a letter, resume and link to your online portfolio of print, web and video work to David Fritz, executive editor, at dfritz@newsleader.com.

The News Leader, a Gannett company, is committed to diversity and proud to be an equal opportunity employer. Employment contingent on a passing pre-employment drug screen and having an acceptable motor vehicle record.

    Interesting, for a 13-16K paper.

I used to deal with the SE there quite a bit. Good guy. No idea if he's still there, though.

Unfortunately that larger organization is the Miami Marlins.

Can tell you with 100 percent certainty that Staunton is a good small down. Nice downtown. If you enjoy mountains/outdoors, enjoy.
