One lady called last year wanting to know where the channel that was carrying the Podunk Tech game was. I suggested she call her provider.
    "Oh, would they know?"
"Yes, they know what channels they carry."

They know that TV stations get most of their news by picking up the paper.

There's a total jackass who calls every now and then who is ungrateful when he gets the answer to his question and swears up a storm when he doesn't get the answer (and no matter what the outcome is, he always hangs up the phone without another word). He called one time to ask if the NHL reseeds their playoffs and then proceeded to go into great detail explaining what reseeding was. When I told him he was correct in his understanding of reseeding, he swore at me and hung up.

Let me guess...... someone has a daughter/sister/niece on the team and believes the whole community needs to know.

    Dear "Concerned Parent,"
Next time you email me, you might want to make sure your name isn't attached to your email.

And next time you email me, don't call one of your daughter's teammates a "negative aspect" of the team, and then proceed to tell me I should remember I'm writing about teenagers.

I'm sorry -- not really, actually, especially now -- that the coach didn't choose your daughter to be featured this season. The "negative aspect" was his first choice when I approached him about the feature, not your daughter. But thanks for reading and taking the time to email me.

Some guy e-mailed us about a story on a TV station's website regarding something pretty innocent that he was trying to claim shed a very negative light on the So-And-So University football team and that we had an obligation to look into it. Well doing a simple online search, I found out the guy works for that particular TV station and also happens to be an alumni of So-And-So STATE University.

No, he had a pretty fair point. MCAA selections were Sunday night - but, as it happens, we had a rather early deadline and so punted the news to Tuesday's paper. Mississippi State, selected to the field, didn't get a news release out about it until midnight Sunday/Monday, which is insane.

  9. Is it you're newspaper's policy not to do that? Or do you just cover multiple classes of state tournaments and can't staff them all? I'm driving 3 hours to a state golf tournament next week, to cover an entire team over a two day period, we're bring along a freelancer/video guy, work even paid for a hotel stay... So, the "dimwit" in this case seems to have a legitimate complaint, in my opinion...however, at least you're consistent with the boys side as well.

Best dumb thing? I was faxed a photo this week and the cover sheet said they wanted the picture in the paper.

A faxed photo?!?!? Should I mention it was from a local home school team parent? Cause it was.

We have nine classes of golf in Mississippi, 6 boys and 3 girls, all playing in a single week. Often there are contending players from our area in each of those. Our emphasis is on the team side of the game, where we have at least three perennial state champion programs. Winning an individual state title, girls or boys, outside the context of the team chase. probably doesn't get you on our front page.

Your mileage, and market, may vary.

Had a soccer coach who left a voicemail with results and she felt she needed to explain what a "hat trick" was.
