University of South Carolina beat writer, GamecockCentral.com

GamecockCentral.com, an affiliate of Rivals.com, has an immediate opening for a writer to cover University of South Carolina athletics.

The writer will be the primary beat for men's basketball and baseball, while significantly assisting with football. (Likewise, we have a full-time football beat writer who assists with the men's basketball and baseball, as needed).

The writer will live in the Columbia area and work out of his or her home.

Travel is involved as we cover every football game (home and away), every baseball game (home and away) and most men's basketball games.

This a 24/7/365 position. The writer will be expected to provide the beat's most in-depth coverage – breaking news, practice coverage, gamers, notebooks and features.

This is an employee position, not independent contractor. We offer competitive pay and limited benefits.

To be an ideal fit for this job, the candidate will have:

- A bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.

- At least two years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper or sports website. High school or college beat experience is strongly preferred but not required.

- The ability to self-manage in a remote work environment (we do not have an office).

- Schedule flexibility to compete in a 24/7/365 work environment.

- A working knowledge of college baseball, basketball and football. Knowledge of University of South Carolina and/or SEC sports is a plus.

- Proven ability to turn around strong, clean copy in a deadline setting.

- Working knowledge of social media to engage fans and promote content.

- The ability to engage fans on GamecockCentral's message boards.

This is a very good gig for someone.

 

Who is leaving? This sounds like -- and I could be wrong -- David Cloninger's job.

Don't know much about the working conditions, but Gamecock Central does a good job covering the Gamecocks.

 

This sounds like a great gig. With Frank Martin down there, I expect the South Carolina program to improve.

 

An alternative to being at a newspaper while still having newspaper responsibilities and more. Great gig for someone needing big-time sports experience. Columbia isn't the best town in SC, but it's nice enough and offers plenty. I'd go after it in a different life.

Hello everyone.

Dave, after working at GamecockCentral for five years, is moving to another outlet. This is his last week.

And it's true that we've already filled the position. Word spreads fast, obviously, but an official announcement is a week away.

In the event that anyone is interested, the hires are official now. The State announced today that it's hired David Cloninger. David worked for GamecockCentral for almost five years. In addition, we announced today that we've hired Ron Aiken to cover the men's basketball and baseball beats. Thank you to everyone who applied.
