There's a difference in dumping Howard, and signing him to a ridiculous extension two years before his contract even expires.

And Ortiz is a DH. If Howard played for a team that used a DH, it would be different.

The Erie Eradication continues: Tigers up 10-1 in the fifth. Scherzer about to go to 17-1.

    This.

There was absolutely zero reason to give Howard a $125 million contract when he had a full two years left on his current deal. Considering ARod is the only position player to sign a deal for a higher AAV, you can't argue that they "got a deal" from signing Howard early either.

Either way, his numbers from '06 to '09 were devastating, HRs and RBIs anyway.

    Code:

Yes, the Rays are barely getting by.
But those pesky Cardinals went to he playoffs seven times in eight years, which many people would consider better than five in a row, and have won two World Series in the past 14 years. Damn math.

I'll take the Cardinals run over the Philadelphia's run and I'll take whatever the Rays have done so far added to what they are about to do.

Nobody put down the Rays, Cards, or Giants.

You put down the Phillies. LTL pointed out that they made the playoffs five straight years, and asked for teams other than the Yankees and Braves that could match that.

None of the three teams you brought up matched that. We point that out and you think we're criticizing those three teams.

We're not. We're criticizing you. Deservedly.

Multiple reports saying the Rangers have put in a waiver claim on Alex Rios.

Perfect replacement for Nelson Cruz in RF (albeit with less power) and the Rangers can afford the salary. However, the White Sox may scuttle the deal by asking for too much, and the Rangers are 3-0 without Cruz so they aren't desperate enough to overpay with prospects.

That's a hell of a sample size without Cruz

Ah, there's that Phillies' fan rage I remember so well. Same rage I got when I told them their team probably sucked going into the year.

There is more to baseball than HRs and RBIs. But mostly, what Philadelphia did was a great example of paying for past performance when you don't have to.

They didn't do a bad job by any stretch. They just did a mediocre job. Selling out for a five-year window isn't a bad thing if you can't do any better than that.

Ryan Howard is a lock for the Hall of Six Great Years.
