How did race come up in Zimmerman? I don't think that the NYT and WSJ just suddenly started letting it fly. Sources made an issue out of it. When sources make an issue out of it here, then those entities will have cover to report on it here, too. Who is the right's Al Sharpton?

When they don't report something like this, I'm more apt to think it is what the media thinks, and don't want to say it.

I think that case proved that race is important to people, and does help to shape opinions.

You want race explored as a potential motive.

Why that potential motive in particular?

There are lots of motives that didn't come up. Robbery. Maybe he was tall and they were short. Maybe they didn't like his shirt color. Maybe they didn't like his haircut. Maybe they mistook him for someone else. None of these motives were mentioned in the story. Where is the haircut lobby? Why aren't they speaking up about this? Why does the monolithic, group-thinking media not reporting that they had shorter hair than the victim? Why?

I get it. You think that the media is being parternalistic by not "giving the people what they want." It sounds like you think that race should be mentioned, from here forward, in all crime stories. Maybe it should. That would make a good journalism topics thread. I don't think that "giving the people what they want" is quite good enough to change the unwritten policy. People want naked photos of Jennifer Lawrence. We don't run those, either. It's an aspect (what readers "want") of coverage decisions. It's not a final arbiter.

The random shooting cries out for speculation regarding motive. This wasn't a robbery. And, the list of folks killed over their height, and/or their shirt color is quite short.

Put, people do believe racial animus is a potential motive for murder. There was a big case in Florida recently where folks were determined race was the motive for the killing of a young black man/child.

Now, maybe this was just a gang initiation, and had nothing to do with race. But people want to know. And, surely the reporters were seeking this information, right? Wouldn't a reporter want to know the race of the killer(s)?

If it is not relevant, then the reporter wouldn't seek the information, right? Reporters don't ask if the shooter was left handed, or right handed. It's irrelevant. If they do see seek the race, then there's a reason why.

If they want to know it, but don't want to share it, then that's a problem.
