According to a couple of Tweets this morning, The Herald-Sun has let go Sports Editor Jimmy DuPree and reporter Beth Velliquette. Not sure of others, if others, or if other N.C. Paxton papers will suffer losses as well.

    Dark day.

Six bodies total, also including graphic designer Pam Lappegard and veteran IT laptop guru Ronnie Wahlers. (When is that $#!+ Rick Bean ever going to lose HIS job?) They're having a reunion meeting of some sort tomorrow at 1 at Chili's on 15-501.

Wonder if this is a Paxton-wide thing, or just limited to Durham?

Interviewed there years and years ago, they had a top-notch sports section and I think 11 writers plus a desk. Maybe it was 11 with desk but it was a strong, full staff. I think they were down to three recently with Jimmy. Wow. Yeah, what now? They have some pretty good sports in that town.

In the mid-2000s, there were 12 full-time sports people. Pending any additions, the staff is down to 4.

When Paxton came in with the initial bloodletting, there were 87 people in the newsroom.

Reports indicate after this round, that number may fall to 18.

    18.

    Con
Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. I'll bet Rick Bean is still drawing his huge salary, though.
