The consensus is, "it better be," because taken on its own merits, the deal was a complete giveaway.

Has there ever been a 24-hour, non-trade deadline period with so many trades?

That's at least 6 involving major leaguers since yesterday afternoon.

    1. Fister to the Nationals

    2. Jim Johnson to the Athletics for Jemile Weeks

    3. Heath Bell & Ryan Hanigan to the Rays

    4. Seth Smith to the Padres for Luke Gregersen

    5. Craig Gentry to the Athletics for Michael Choice

    6. Dexter Fowler to the Astros for Jordan Lyles & Brandon Barnes

Plus, the Kazmir, Pierzynski and Nathan signings.

    Crazy, crazy day ...

Gentry trade for Choice is interesting. Choice has lots of upside and Gentry is not much more than a good fourth outfielder. Makes you wonder, though, if Billy Beane knows something about Choice.

Also interesting: It leaves Mitch Moreland, Chris McGuiness and Jim Adduci as the only honky position players on the Rangers' 40-man. That is a significant demographic shift in the clubhouse over the last two seasons.

Beane did the same thing in the middle of last season by trading Grant Green, his previous year's first-round pick, for Alberto Callaspo. I think you're right and he doesn't think much of their future.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia to the Marlins for 3 years, $21 million:

He's from West Palm Beach, so I guess that's why he signed there.

And I guess after McCann signed with the Yankees, Pierzynski signed with the Red Sox and Hanigan was traded to the Rays, there aren't many landing spots left for catchers.

I wonder if that means the Twins will sign JP Arencibia now.

Jacoby Ellsbury close on 7-year deal with the Yankees, per Jon Heyman:

I wonder what this does with Cano ...

Doesn't that have to mean the Yankees aren't signing him?

A's are showing signs of going for it all in 2014. Which translates to get ready for the fire sale in 2015.

Depends on what happens with A-Rod's suspension, I suppose.

According to this link, the Yankees already have $151.9 million committed to their 2014 payroll, and that's WITHOUT A-Rod and Cano:

Thought this tweet from ESPNBoston's Jeremy Lundblad was interesting:

Not sure what the Yankees are doing with that deal. Ellsbury's power has eroded over the past 2 seasons (not that he had that much to begin with) and he's not the kind of guy who's going to ever play an entire season. His speed probably won't be that far behind his power.
