Penn State was 7-5 this season and beat Wisconsin in the season finale. They're not chopped liver.

As the lost scholarships continue to make their impact and O'Brien leaves, it'll get worse.

7-5 in a weak Big 10 sans Ohio State. They were also boat raced by Indiana this year.

Maybe. Everyone thought that a ton of players would transfer out immediately and the team would be terrible. But they've had two winning seasons since O'Brien arrived. I'm not sure O'Brien is bailing. He might, but it's not a lock.

As for scholarships, I read that PSU is appealing to have the penalty reduced. Not sure as to the status of that appeal. But it makes sense. There was a lot of public outrage when the Sandusky thing first went public and too many people were screaming for blood. As time passes and the school and current people (both students and administrators) distance themselves from that, an appeal for reduction in penalties might be viewed more favorably.

I actually think Purdue was the weakest team in the Big 10 this year. Followed by Illinois. Indiana and Penn State were more competitive.

Oregon DC Nick Aliotti, who spent 21 years with the Ducks under four head coaches, will retire after the Alamo Bowl:

Now, where have we heard that before? Me thinks it did not end well the first time around.

Maryland won't be much better right away. Everytime they played someone halfway decent, they got hammered.

On the one hand, sure I figure there was pressure - on the other hand the guy has been at Oregon so long he'll have a decent state pension whether he coaches somewhere else or not.

In the upcoming BYU-Washington game will be a first for an FBS game -- two females working the game as officials.

Sarah Thomas as line judge and Maia Chaka as head linesman.

    Both Conference USA officials.
